Graduates can earn certification by passing the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination. In addition, students obtain licensure by passing the state board of dentistry clinical exam. After obtaining their license, dental hygienists become Registered Dental Hygienist.
Employment Opportunities
Graduates Dental Hygienists are in demand in general dental practices and specialty practices such as periodontics or pediatric dentistry. They may also work in hospitals, nursing homes or public health clinics.
Average Salary
The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists median pay at $30 an hour. Hourly pay can vary.

HCC Coleman recommends that students complete all prerequisite and academic courses before admission to the Dental Hygiene program. It is also recommended that all students complete all co-requisite courses before entry into the program. Please contact your advisor for more information.

Dental Hygiene
  • Eligibility requirements include: passing a TSI state approved test and all developmental courses needed for college level English, Reading, and MATH 0312, or transcript(s) indicating credits in college-level Reading and English.
  • HESI exam 70% cumulative passing grade.
  • CELSA test is required if the applicant did not attend high school or college in the USA. A minimum grade of C must be earned for each of the required academic courses while maintaining a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
  • BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, BIOL 2420 and CHEM 1305 must have been completed no later than five years at application date deadline.
